29-6-2025 Bayern Munich 4 Flamengo 2 FIFA Club World Cup

Bundesliga powerhouses Bayern Munich set up a quarter-final meeting with PSG after this solid defeat of one of the leading South American teams.

Two well taken goals by England star Harry Kane were one of the main differences between the sides, serving to illustrate how many of the Brazilian sides seem to lack such a quality out-and-out striker.

Another 60,000 plus contingent of mostly Flamengo fans watched in the Florida heat as their heroes proved spirited but no match for the talent of these Europeans.

If you wear orange boots you do stand out, and Harry Kane did just that.

He delivered two telling goals, firstly receiving the ball from Dayot Upamecano’s interception he drove in a fine left foot strike before sealing the win with a right foot into the corner when set up by Joshua Kimmich.

The England star showed how he is one of the best at creating space to power home with either foot.

Flamengo had begun by pressing their opponents but within five minutes they were a goal down.

It came after a series of near post corners by Kimmich, the last of which was inadvertently deflected into his own goal by the unfortunate Erick Pulgar (it was not the Chilean’s day as he would be carried off injured later)

Then within another five minutes Kane struck to make it 2-0 and it was clear Bayern’s class would probably be too much for the Rubro-Negro.

Those early goals quietened the vast Flamengo support who dominated the sun drenched Hard Rock Stadium.

But Filipe Luis' men did have their moments, particularly when Luis Araujo twice tested Manuel Neuer.

And they would get one back, when the top rated Gerson slammed in a left wing cross (leaving Neuer grasping at thin air)

That brought the fans some hope, which would be dampened down again when Leon Goretzka guided in a third from 25 yards before half time.

A half that ended with a series of altercations and a flurry of yellow cards from English referee Michael Oliver.

Overall it had been sobering for the Brazilians who often had enough possession but lacked the attacking prowess of the likes of Olise, Kane, and co.

However, Flamengo did receive another potential lifeline when a penalty was awarded after Olise’s somewhat unnecessary handball.

The usually reliable ex-Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho duly obliged in typical style to make it 3-2 on 55 minutes.

But it never looked enough and with twenty to go Harry Kane produced that right footer to seal the outcome for the Bavarians.

Various changes were made and one of the Flamengo previous scorers, Wallace Yan, did go close with a header.

Ultimately, the extra class of Bayern Munich told and in particular the ability of Harry Kane to deliver those important goals.

He may well need to be at his best, as will his teammates, if they are to overcome PSG in the upcoming quarter-final.
